While visiting the top of Signal Hill for the first time today, we spotted real-life NASA astronaut Catherine Cady Coleman in her full space suit. She’s spent over 180 days in space, including two Space Shuttle missions and work at the International Space Station. Catherine and her colleagues are in Cape Town for the 62nd International Astronautical Congress, which is being held in Africa for the first time in the history of the annual gathering.
We were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of her posing for some publicity shots. Watch:Edit: Steve added a comment to this post, confirming that this was not Catherine Coleman in the suit but rather Candice Goodwin. Read more about Candice here.
Hi Jason,
As far as I know, this was not Cady Coleman – it was a local person walking around in the space suit – I say this because I spent the day with Cady on the 5th… the irony is I was going to take her up signal hill that day but due to Cold play traffic we could not squeeze it in.

Hi Steve – thanks for the comment. Do you know of any way of verifying who this was in the suit, so I can update the post?
Hi J,As far as I can tell, part of our space week programme involved “publicity” events with people wearing suits being spotted around town…. Maybe this will shed some light…http://tablemountain.net/blog/entry/up_up_and_away_nasa_astronaut_visits_table_mountain/But Candice the “astronaut” is local so she is not actually a NASA astronaut but rather someone wearing a replica suit. We had Mr Charles Bolden (head of NASA speaking to the public at the CTICC and Cady Coleman on the 5th at Rustenburg Girls Junior. With our new contacts at NASA we hope to bring more Astros to Cape Town.SSteve ShermanLIVING MATHS P.O. Thanks Steve. Pity — but looking forward to seeing more Astro activity in Cape Town!
